An Application
Contrast 1KI 15:29 to 1KI 16:7. At face value we are tempted to say God is fickle and self-contradictory. But it's we who are those things, and we like to make God in our image. Jeroboam's fate was sealed, but that wasn't permission for Baasha to be cruel. Baasha bastardized God's prophecy and ticked God off.
Connect the Dots
God is used to working with sinners, failures, and nobodies: EX 3:11, 1SA 9:21, 2SA 12:7-8, 1KI 14:7-11, 16:2, MT 9:10-13. God's willingness here should be encouragement for all of us: ROM 5:8.
