An Application1SA 13:12, winning the Lord's favor is a noble desire, but how we do it is critical. A major recurring theme in scripture is God decides how He wants to be honored and we don't. When God declares His preference and we decide we can honor Him another way (or worse, the opposite way) that's worshiping a false god we've made in our own image. Saul will repeat this sin in 2 chapters, and Sam will have a powerful response. If only Saul had remembered what was written about later in PS 44:2-4.

Connect the Dots1SA 13:1 was ommitted by the GNTD due to technical translation concerns. / 1SA 13:3, Geba is deep in Israelite territory, presumably the Philistine commander was there for ignoble reasons, stiring up trouble, and Jonathan had enough of it. / Back in 1SA 10:8 Saul was told to wait 7 days. In 1SA 13:8 he did but rather than give Sam until the end of the 7th day, he decided he was late. Sam was probably on his way to tell Saul what God had told Gideon in JDG 7:2, instead he got 1SA 13:13-14.
