An ApplicationDavid's confidence in God was dripping in this story, clearly voluntarily putting his life in both God's and Saul's hands. His leadership of his men was exemplary, too. Leaders have two roles: help their people get what they want, and tell their people what they need/should do. When leaders do poorly at either of these, they are scorned. These two responsibilities are often contradictory, so finding the right balance is the sign of a good leader.

Connect the DotsSaul didn't properly tell his men what they should do, twice, in chapters 13 and 15, and God got angry at him. David here didn't listen to his men but told them what they should do.
