Some Thoughts
The Amalekites had probably figured out it was David who'd wiped out their countrymen not too long ago and had come to get revenge. But they either had a really bad plan or really bad timing. God may have inspired the Amalekites bad timing as a sign that David won't need Ziklag anymore, and to keep any of his men from getting comfortable there and then complaining about leaving. And, at the same time, God was able to show His providence (notice the town was destroyed but no one was killed.)
