An ApplicationWe all have a good side of our life story, and a bad. In the case of Rehoboam, this story tells all the good it could, first, before giving us the overwhelmingly bad news in the next story. We got the same thing with his father, Solomon, in 1KI 10-11. / Imagine if all the believers left the country (as in 2CH 11:16-17) how bad and quickly the culture would decay.

Connect the DotsIn 2CH 11:18, Reheboam married a granddaughter of Eliab (1SA 16:6, 17:28) and in 2CH 11:20 he married a daughter of Absalom. Remember Absalom? He was a naughty, shrewd guy: 2SA 13:1, 2SA 15:9-10, 2SA 16:22. Makes sense why we read what we read later in 2CH 15:16. For 2CH 11:21, compare his father in 1KI 11:3. Here we get a taste of why God said what He said in EX 20:5. God doesn't need to be vindictive, boys are naturally like their fathers.
