An ApplicationAbsalom didn't even have a single quote in this story, indicating he had nothing going for him (not even a pretense of justification for his choices). He just had a dumb, selfish plan, and was following through with it, regardless of the death and devastation it caused. Perfect example of the natural state of man. Then we have David serving as a good example of God by being magnanimous in 2SA 18:5.

Connect the Dots2SA 18:2 David wanted to go into battle to find & defend Absalom, as pointed out in 2SA 18:5. This will come up again in the next story. 2SA 18:8 may be a reference to divine intervention, same for 2SA 18:9 & 18. It's understandable Joab would've had a change of heart between 2SA 14:1-2 & 2SA 18:11,14, given Absalom's bad choices in the interim.
