An ApplicationThe trick here (literally) was at the end of EST 3:8, when Haman advised his boss that "it was not in your best interest." That was a lie. The truth was it was "in my personal, egotistical interests." If Xerxes were to realize such a trick had been played on him, it would not go well for the trickster. Sadly, we often treat our Creator the same way. How often do we self proclaim "I deserve this, therefore God must approve" (ISA 29:13, MAL 1:6-8).

Connect the DotsHaman was a descendent of King Agag (EST 3:1,10), whom God had told Saul to kill (along with all of Agag's people) in 1SA 15. The Jews and Amalekites had much history, going back farther than EX 17:14. There's no knowing how Haman's ancestor escaped execution, but clearly he was holding a grudge. Besides the obvious that his decree would allow complete amnesty for (legalize) the murder of all Jews, that would include those who were rebuilding God's temple in Jerusalem at this time (EZR 4:1,6).
