An Application
This is an analagous story being told by God of His perspective on (or in 21st century postmodern terms, how He feels about) the last 1,200 years have gone for Him and His bride: His people (ISA 54:5, JER 31:32). Whenever we get into an argument with anyone, it is important to understand why they feel the way they do before we pass judgement on them. Here is our opportunity for insight into the heart of God. God is no stranger to analogies, He'll speak in parables a lot when He visits in person.
Connect the Dots
When God starts off an encounter with EZE 16:1-2, you know it's going to be bad. Compare the theme of this story with HOS 1:2. (God had spoken an abbreviated version of the same message to Hosea a few decades prior, that time including a live object lesson.) / God is neither male nor female, when He compares His people to a bride, that's for our benefit, not His. Earlier, in EX 4:22-23, His spoke to Moses for the benefit of Pharaoh, describing His people as His first born son.
