An ApplicationRemember these women weren't just good Judao-Christian women who needed a husband. They were pagans, and we read many stories of how pagan women ruined the faith of God's people. Ezra was just taking God's expectations seriously. If any of these women were any good, then God would've excused them like He did Rahab, Ruth, and others. EZR 9:6, 13, 15, are great examples of humility before God. In our modern culture, we could (should) say the same as Ezra did. We are just as guilty, if not more.

Connect the DotsIn the modern western world, marriages are initiated by love/lust and have largely forgotten or rejected the ideas of arranged & political/economic marriages. So-called love marriages can easily forget about the economic role of marriage alliances, which is negligent, but we see in EZR 9:2, the economics can also be over-emphasized (2CO 6:14). / A similar marital purge will happen again in a few years, after more exiles arrive. It's unclear why the second purge doesn't reference this first one.
