An ApplicationEven though he was blessed and favored by God (GE 32:9) he wasn't exempt from worldly fear (GE 32:7, 11). Courage will be recommended by God in a few hundred years to Jacob's descendants, Moses and Joshua. Jacob seems to have known that courage was not the absence of fear, but rather the absence of self. May we be bold and courageous when doing God's work.

Connect the DotsWhile his grandpa (GE 22:12) and son (GE 42:18) will be explicitly described as fearing God, it is trivia that neither Jacob nor his father Isaac were recorded explicitly as fearing God. / Notice in GE 32:12, Jacob mentions sand on the seashore. But the only reference to seashore so far was GE 22:15-18, which indicates Jacob had been taught by his dad, Isaac, who'd been taught by his dad, Abraham.
