Some Thoughts
This story ends abruptly, but that's all we have. Other inferences from scripture indicate just as Jonah feared, the Ninevites repented and God relented. But then a century later the prophet Nahum warned the Ninevites again they were in trouble (NAH 1:1-2) but they didn't repent that time. JNH 4:9 makes Jonah sound like a teenager (though he probably wasn't). Maybe he feared returning home and telling his people, "yep, I saved our enemies." Being a prophet is emotionally exhauting: NUM 11:14-15.
