An ApplicationWithout the backstory from DT we might think Joshua was really mean. But the conquered nations were not just random good Christian people. They were really disgusting. God had been talking about their unrepentant sin for generations. He probably even sent them prophets (like Balaam) He just didn't tell us about. When they were slaughtered, it was judgement from God, not just another military conquest. Centuries later, God will send the Assyrians and Babylonians to judge the Israelites, too.

Connect the DotsIt's interesting how JOS 10:28 & 30 mention doing the same as to the king of Jericho, but back in JOS 6 there was no explicit mention of what they did to him. The king of Ai's fate was told in JOS 8:29, and the 5 kings in JOS 10:27. / When we remember what God said in Deuteronomy (not limited to DT 12:29-31) we are reminded that this whole military campaign was not arbitrary, rather it was explicit religious warfare. Just as with the Egyptians in EX 12:12. And there's the 2nd of 10C: EX 20:4-6.
