An ApplicationStrong (yet still respectful) language from God of how horrific we treat Him, then we have the nerve to say "why are you so picky?" As for Esau's descendants (MAL 1:2-3) remember God doesn't discriminate like we do on demographics, biology, economics, but rather beliefs. Esau and his posterity must have rejected God, while Jacob and his (more or less) honored Him (Joseph, Moses, Samuel, etc.) MAL 1:8 is a powerful reminder.

Connect the DotsMAL 1:2-5 is the first incredulence, MAL 1:6-14 is the second. Compare MAL 1:10 with LEV 10:1-2, MAL 1:12 with GE 4:3-5 and ISA 1:11-17, and this whole chapter with AM 5:21-22. MAL 1:2a is so humanly typical, later there will be JN 3:16 and ROM 5:8.
