An Application
MK 11:15 is the only recorded scenario where Jesus got violent. (It's a parallel to MT 21:12 in the last story.) MK 11:14 was only one of the times He got mad (compare MT 17:17) but since He loves people more than anything in creation (remember GE 1:26, and we were the final recorded act of creation in GE 1) and He was under a lot of stress, knowing He'd be murdered in less than a week, that tree took some wrath.
Connect the Dots
While there are no direct quotations, Jesus seems to be quoting Himself from ISA 5 with His attitude to the fig tree. God repeatedly refers to His people as fig trees, such as in Joel 1:6-7. This curse of Jesus seems symbolic of His attitude towards the Jewish people, for their nation was indeed withered (destroyed) only one generation later, not to return to this land for almost 2,000 years. / Not many stories about plants in the Bible, but there were JNH 4:9 & GE 2:9.
