An ApplicationIn MK 5:17, they were probably afraid or sick of super powerful super natural beings and after MK 5:4-5 and 13, just wanted to be left alone. They couldn't deny the miracle, and the good of the man being liberated, but a loss of 2,000 pigs was a loss of approximately $2 million in potential income for the town (in today's value). Hopefully later, they were more receptive to the real miracle of who Jesus was and why He was there.

Connect the DotsIn MK 5:9, literally the name was "legion", which was 6,000 Roman soldiers, and demons lie/exaggerate, so there could easily have been fewer, but even 6 would be a lot.
