An ApplicationMT 16:18 is one of the most controversial verses in Christiandom. Catholics think "this rock" was Peter, protestants think it was the revelation that Jesus is the Messiah (MT 16:16). Jesus's biggest stated problem with humanity was with our "establishment" (climaxing in MT 23) which inevitably led people to themselves and away from Him (JER 5:30-31, MT 15:3, 9, 23:15). It seems insane to think He would tear down one establishment just to replace it with another. Maybe He had a better idea.

Connect the DotsIn MT 16:22, Peter was naively giving Jesus the same temptation that Satan did back in MT 4:9, which, when we paraphrase, was "you can earn the victory without effort, rejection, or suffering." How we wish that were true, but it's a lie of Satan, even when we hear it today. When we do God's work we need no help from Satan's methods, no matter how appealing they may be, for remember JAM 4:4.
