An ApplicationThe older son could be said to have virtue without truth since he ultimately obeyed even though he didn't have the right answer. The younger son could be said to have truth without virtue since he knew the right answer but didn't obey. Neither extreme is presented as a best practice. Jesus modeled the best practice of being full of both (JN 1:14). We can't be full of both, but we can have a balance of both grace and truth, as well as truth and virtue.

Connect the DotsWe can only imagine how bad the bickering arguments would have been between these two siblings, if they were real. (Many church denominations today differ on little more grounds.) Regardless of how those arguments would go, God has already expressed His opinion which should settle this matter for us: compare MT 21:31 to MT 7:21, JAM 1:22 & 2:20. But clearly knowing and doing are two different things, may we constantly do better (PHP 2:3-4).
