An ApplicationThe religious leaders had created an in-crowd, and tax collectors and sinners were out. Jesus was out, too, because He rejected their establishment and insisted God had His own perspective that differed from theirs. For that offense, they wouldn't have been content even if He went to hell. And His disciples, too, but they weren't a threat, compared to Jesus. Jesus was criticized for loving people, and He warned us we would be too. So expect it, and welcome it. Remember LK 6:26 & JAM 4:4.

Connect the DotsYou don't have to have it all together to follow Jesus. / MT 9:13 was quoting HOS 6:6, which had an interesting comparison in JER 9:23-24. / Compare other tax collector references in MT 5:46, LK 3:12-13, 7:29-30, 15:1, 18:10-14, and parallel in MK 2:13-17 and LK 5:27-32. Also compare MT 9:11-13 to Jesus's attitude in MT 23:23.
