An ApplicationN. was a historic leader, and a servant leader as admonished by Jesus (MT 20:25-28, JN 13:12-17). He wanted no power, but God's name and His people to be safely respected. When the emperor asked him "what do you want," he was ready with a well thought out answer. He'd strategically prayed & planned ahead, and when the opportunity came, he acted. May we do the same when our time comes. He knew how to keep a secret (NE 2:12), to inspire the people (NE 2:18), and to handle adversity (NE 2:20).

Connect the DotsCompare NE 2:9 to EZR 7:9 & 8:22. In a couple words he alluded to his 4-6 month journey. / The Artaxerxes of NE 2:1 was the same as EZR 7:1, but not same as EZR 4:7. / NE 2:19 is classic pagan/atheist attack: criticize with or without basis. N. personally knew the emperor, S, T, and G had only ever read letters from him. / N. was wise to exclude these foreigners in NE 2:20 (2CO 6:14-16).
