An ApplicationEven today, civilization is only as strong as people allow it to be. When we slack off, we don't self correct, we need a strong leader to remind us. Nehemiah was that in his day. Sometimes God is merciful and reminds us Himself, sometimes He sends a leader, but sometimes He lets us digress because He already gave us enough warning and encouragement. The Jews were blessed to have Nehemiah, maybe you will be the one to do something similar someday.

Connect the DotsThe Israelites had a history with the people mentioned in NE 13:1 (see GE 19:36-38, DT 2:19, 1KI 14:21, 1SA 11:2, & AM 1:13.) And Tobiah was from there: NE 2:19, which made NE 13:4-8 richer. / Eliashib (NE 13:4) was mentioned in NE 3:1 and alluded to in EZR 10:6. / NE 13:23 was probably after EZR 9:2 making this sin all the more infuriating to N. / In JER 50:14-15, 38-40, God forwarned that Babylon would eventually be destroyed, never to be rebuilt again.
