An ApplicationNE 5:15 was an excellent example of a leader putting his money where his mouth is, and believing that the cause is greater than himself. He intuited the servant leadership style that Jesus would later instruct us most succinctly in MT 20:25-28 and passed on what was truly due him, as described by Paul in 1CO 9:7-14 & 1TI 5:17-18.

Connect the DotsContrast NE 5:13 to JER 34:8-11. This time they did better. / This chapter was surely an intentional contrast between the rest of the leaders' selfishness and Nehemiah's selflessness. / When the emperor had asked how long he'd be gone in NE 2:6, no answer was recorded, but perhaps in NE 5:14 there is a hint. Comparing NE 5:14 to EZR 7:7 we infer N. came 13 years after E.
