An ApplicationThe reason Good got so mad may have been more about what God was wanting to be recorded for all of time but Moses ruined it, more so than the simple act of disobedience. Imagine how cool it'd have been to have a story of Moses simply speaking to the rock and God gushing out water? Compare Elijah's contest on Mount Carmel in 1KI 18 where he just asked for fire from heaven and God sent it. What like this does God have in mind for us?

Connect the DotsIn NUM 20:3, they're referring to NUM 16:17-18,35. / Pay close attention to the wording in NUM 20:10. Moses said "we," not God. Then the "twice" implies he may have done it a first time, and nothing happened, then he tried again, possibly after receiving heckling from the crowd. Rather than correct him in the moment, God punished him later. Though really, 40 years leading these incessant complainers was quite a run, and God may have been being merciful. / Compare NUM 20:13 to ISA 5:15-16, 6:1-4.
