An ApplicationWe don't read why Balaam was even here, since he (a) was told repeatedly to only tell Balak what God told him, and (b) supposedly went home a few stories ago (NUM 22:5, 24:25). Perhaps the Midian kings rephrased the question for Balaam and asked for personal advice rather than an oracle, and perhaps that was enough to trick him into cooperating. Based on later scriptures, it seems Balaam was integral to the war strategy of sending in prostitutes rather than infantry.

Connect the DotsWe read in NUM 31:7-8 that Balaam didn't get his wish in NUM 23:10. John the Baptiser will be able to relate, in about 1,400 years. The few remaining references to Balaam in the rest of scripture were not good: DT 23:4-6, JOS 13:22, MIC 6:5, 2PE 2:15, JUD 1:11, and REV 2:14. Balak, king of Moab, wasn't mentioned in NUM 31:7-8 likely because he was still in Moab and this was Midian.
